The Gaon and the Golem

Translated by Eitan Medini

1732. middle of the year. Middle of the night.

Middle of the deed. Middle of the creation.

“Flash of lightning! Spark and thunder! Zīz śāday with me”!

In the year 5,491 to the first man’s creation,

Again a man tried to create a man.

A boy who hasn’t grew a beard on his cheeks,

Wished to grow a body from ashes.

Elijah ben Solomon, a twelve year old, a wonder boy,

At age ten no teacher could stop him.

And prior to his reaching the age of Bar Mitzvah

He hurried to do the deed,

Since if it’s forbidden, he will not be found guilty by Heaven.

Zīz śāday“!

Light’s wing spread from wall to wall

And they are raging like a fire’s flames

And a strong wind storms between them,

Mixing all the books like leaves

And lifting the boy too a little in the air,

A moment before he lie down the name of God

In the creature’s mouth.

“God with me I will not fear!

May be you the angel who takes the souls out of the dividing screen

And descending them from high heavens

Into the Earth’s bodies?”

“Elijah Elijah… Elijah!

You have learned very throughly twenty two letters,

Their joining and combining, but the most important letter of all,

You haven’t understood, you haven’t studied, you haven’t feared!

One Elijah already created one

And the one chiseled a mark of disgrace on his forehead!

And you, that you are reach in spirit,

Why have you done this silliness”?!

“Heavenly forgiveness!  Mercy and forgiveness!

And indeed I have hoped to free with his help our holy city!

To crack the gate of mercy after two hundred years

And to remove from her all the evil powers!”

“God will fight for you and you will be silent!

It’s up to him only to revive people out of the ground׳s belly.

Will you not remember the Babylonian’s pride?

And when they began, and now nothing will be out of their

Wish, everything they planned to do!”

The angel has torn a golden feather of his wings,

Gave it to the boy and ordered him this way:

“Now gather this man’s peel

And place it in the great synagogue

With this note upon his chest:

This Golem will be for you

An allegory for coming generations.

The people of Israel are like the Golem.

Since if God in his mouth

But not in his heart,

Or If God in his heart

But not in his mouth,

As good as dead he is in his eyes!

The boy obeyed the angel,

Not so the people, not always.

But, with the golden quill Gabriel gave him,

He wrote, the future Vilna Gaon,

The truth in the world’s body.
